Seeds and more seeds!

There is a binocular lens in our school.

Today we watch some of the seeds with the binocular lens.  It's a wonderful experience!

Exploring the diversity of seeds

We share our ideas in class.

A seed is:

• Something you can plant/sow to get fruit and vegetables.  
• A part of the plant that can turn into a new plant.  

With these ideas in mind, we meet Lorena Passarelli, a Teacher Trainer for the Programa Huertas Escolares.  Lorena gives us a lot of information about seeds.

 

She brings her private collection of seeds.

There are different seeds in it: lettuce seeds, peach seeds, pea seeds and lots more.


We touch the seeds.  We watch them with our own eyes.

 


We watch them with magnifying glasses.

We play a guessing game.


We classify them according to colour, size, shape and species.

 

We are very happy.  Lorena gives us a piece of homework.  We must think what is inside a seed.  We are seed detectives now!

We go on a garden scavenger hunt

Now we know what we need to start a garden, we go on a garden scavenger hunt.  We visit 6th. form's vegetable garden

and we watch the plants they are growing there.

We keep a record of the things we see

We ask lots of questions!

We visit 6th. form students and ask them a lot of questions.  

• What is a vegetable garden?
• What do you need to start a vegetable garden?
• Is it difficult?
• Do you use pesticides or fertilizers?
• Which vegetables can we find in your garden?

The girls and boys in 6th. form answer our questions.

They tell us they don't use pesticides or fertilizers because they are keeping an organic garden.  They use compost.

There are some helpers who water the plants regularly.

They show us some of the pots they have in their classroom.

We confirm some of our ideas.  To start a vegetable garden you need soil, seeds, water, sunlight and pots.  They made the pots with plastic bottles and glasses.

 Now we are ready to start our own vegetable garden!

What is a vegetable garden?

We are in 3rd. form.  We want to start a vegetable garden.  We share our ideas about what a vegetable garden is with our classmates in our English lesson.  

We make a poster with our ideas.  We think that:

• a vegetable garden is a place where you can grow vegetables.
• To start a vegetable garden you need seeds, soil, pots, sunlight, water and air.  

Now we are ready to ask some questions to the students in 6th form to check if our ideas are correct.  They are keeping their own vegetable garden and they know a lot about gardening.
